Edward Kent finished writing out his statement for the sheriff. He wasn't sure it was strictly necessary, but Sheriff Lancaster seemed to feel it was.
"Well I'll go and find Miss Standish and Charlotte. The child smiled at me a little this morning... that's a huge improvement."
Roderick Lancaster looked uncomfortable. "Maybe I should have told you earlier, but I've a feeling your Miss Standish may be visiting Miss Annabelle's establishment."
"What! For pity's sake, why?"
"She's got it into her head that is where the Sullivans intended to sell the girl."
"And how did she get to know about Miss Annabelle?"
The sheriff looked even more uncomfortable. "I guess it slipped out when she was talking to me."
"Great Heavens above! I'd better get down there before she burns it down."
"Seems to me Kent that woman of yours needs her backside warmed."
Ted snorted. "I've done that... twice. She's tougher than she looks, that one."
In spite of his tough words, Ted wasn't angry as he hurried to Miss Annabelle's, he was more lost in admiration. Ellen was having such a powerful effect on him. He could seriously see himself settling down with her. She would need some managing of course. He'd probably have to spank her at first, but not too much. She just needed to rein her horns in a little. It was only as he was walking to the front door that he realized how difficult his position was. He was a fairly regular customer at Miss Annabelle's, but he didn't want Ellen knowing that. A man had his needs, but he didn't want the girl he'd like to marry knowing about it. Perhaps it would be better not to go in. On the other hand Ellen might need rescuing or maybe Miss Annabelle needed rescuing! Oh Lord, it was a problem. He made up his mind abruptly and rang the bell.
The maid knew him well and gave him a big smile. Before she could say a word Ted spoke. "I'm looking for Miss Standish. Is she here?"
"Oh yes Mr. Kent, she's in with Miss Annabelle. Been in there quite a while. I'll show you in."
The maid knocked on the door and hearing the, "Come in," opened the door, Ted walked in preventing the maid from giving him away.
Miss Annabelle Storey knew Ted extremely well. He was a good and valued customer, but Ellen saw no sign of that as Belle rose graciously to her feet and said, "You must be the famous Mr. Edward Kent. Welcome, do sit, I'll have another cup brought in."
Ellen beamed at him. "Oh Ted, Belle and I have had such a good chat and she's going to help me try and find Andrew. She's pointed out that Andrew must have his needs like all young men and she is going to use her contacts with other establishments. Isn't that wonderful?"
Ted felt rather weak. He'd come expecting trouble and here was Ellen drinking coffee with Miss Annabelle as if they were old friends. He sank into one of the soft cushioned chairs.
